In addition to being a terrific songwriter, Sayers is quite a capable guitar player. On this latest album, ‘Christmastime’ Sayers hooks up with Mandolin player Michael Orlando for an offering of seasonal carols that have a strong roots base. Using a sparse performance in a seemingly live setting this album captures a romanticized feel of what Christmas on the prairie before the turn of the 20th century may have sounded like. There is an interesting guitar / mandolin interplay during the otherwise traditional ‘Little Drummer Boy’ that would appeal to Chet Atkins / Ricky Scruggs fans. Sayer’s go at the Chuck Berry standard, ‘Run Run Rudolph’ is well done and an energetic highlight of the album. Of the albums 13 tracks only one, ‘Just About Christmas Time’ is not a standard. On the track, ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’ Sayers and Orlando modulate the song and rip through an exchange of instrumental solo breaks that are tasty and rockin’. This would be a great gift for your average blues / Americana music fan that is looking for something familiar yet refreshing to be the soundtrack of their holiday season.
"One of the year's strongest independently distributed adult rock albums; 12 Bars and the Naked Truth." Like so many significant "adult rock" artists (READ: fans are 35+), Sayers hails from the great state of Texas. On this, his fifth album, Sayers brings a ultra mature sound, distinctive from many of the Texas artists and very clearly not under the auspices of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. After his last album's (Supersonic) edgy rock sound, Sayers has moved to a complete focus on the song and done it well. At a time when two good songs on an album has become a standard, Sayers has the skills to string together a full length album of well above average songs (a rarity in today's `thanks to technology we can make albums much, much longer than really necessary' recording industry.) Do it for the passion. For me, today, what so many mature rock bands lack is commitment to passion: a willingness to lean into the storm and risk a bit of who they are, their control, in exchange for a well crafted song, a well performed song. `12 Bars & the Naked Truth' finds Sayers singing on day-to-day live issues that many of his listeners will be able to relate to; that living in the moment is important to happiness (These are the Good Old Days) and dealing with folks you may rather not have had to deal with (Mister Know-It-All) "Why would you compromise when you're so wise?" "You better pray for rain, you don't know rain like I do." Sayers sexy baritone vocals set off well against his tasteful guitar licks and rhythm section that plods along solidly. What's it sound like? Straight ahead Tom Petty coming from Texas rather than Florida. In a possibly unconscious nod to great songwriters, like Ray Davies (Kinks) before him, Sayers sings of a Sunday afternoon but in this case the focus is on love gone awry. On the song `Complicated' Sayers lays out the average male mental gymnastics of dealing with the so-called more delicate sex. "I'm easy, so easy, you can read my mind with just one look into my eyes. I'm not brilliant or amazing; wear my heart on my sleeve but that's the kind of thing you're looking for... but you're so complicated it's blows my mind. You're so sophisticated I wonder why? I'm forgiveful, and forgetful..." A consummate self marketer, Sayers delivers a complete entertainment package to his fans; exceptional songwriting, very strong live performances, high quality packaging & imaging, an informative website that is replete with options to interact with the pop star including downloads and merchandise. So don't take my word for it, check out '12 Bars' on a listening station or go to www.HaddenSayers.com and listen for yourself. Sayers SHOULD be a part of your album collection's future. You'll love the passion.
As soon as I bought this CD at Hadden's show in Niagara Falls it became a favorite of mine amongst a CD collection approaching 800 CD's - top twenty at least. I bought all of his CD's that night and enjoy them all but this one edges out the live CD as my favorite. The songwriting is original and insightful, top notch guitar work and a great voice make this a must have for all music lovers. I wish Hadden the best (he deserves it)- can't wait for the next release From Australia: This is very hard to categorise. It's a very original mix of BLUES - POWER POP and ROCK. Great band, great guitar, excellent original songs, intelligent lyrics, great vocals and all that from a virtual unknown. If you like musik that is original and totaly infectuous, look no further. This delivers on all counts and will turn you into a SAYER fan after the first listen. Can't wait for the next SAYERS CD to be delivered. What a talent!
Every now and then this happens: in the midst of previewing a normally much too high stack of recordings to consider for reviews, a truly outstanding recording will arrive and force its way to the front of the pack. While I feel the need to apologize to the artists who are patiently awaiting a review, I have to write them the way I see and feel them. With that said, for the past couple of weeks, I have been unable to get the Hadden Sayers CD "Swingin' From the Fabulous Satellite-Live From Texas" out of my player. This CD has become one of my personal favorites and embodies all of the essential elements of blues/rock music that have made me such a loyal and long time fan. Hadden Sayers is, without question, one of the most "complete packages" of this genre. He is a diverse and abundantly blessed guitarist, cut from the Lonnie Mack/Stevie Ray mold (is there any better than this?) with a touch of Carl Perkins thrown in for good measure. He is also among the better vocalists of the genre and in fact I would put him up against any of the greats. His music is basically Texas rock and blues, similar in sound to Chris Duarte. The CD was recorded live at the Fabulous Satellite Lounge in Houston without overdubs or musicians added later, all of which makes this an even more remarkable recording as the band's timing and performance are first rate. Sayers' rhythm section of Steve Will on bass and rock solid Eric Hansen on drums is impressive and contributes greatly to his sound. Sayers is also a terrific song writer, as 10 of the 12 tracks are his original compositions, and they are very well written indeed. As a bit of a side note, along with being a great lead player, Sayers is in addition an excellent rhythm guitarist, an art form which has been lost to most modern day ax slingers. His transitions from rhythm to lead and back again are as fluid as any I have heard by any guitarist. You have to listen hard at times to realize that there is not a second guitarist playing on the set. I cannot recall that during my years of writing, that I have ever noticed this talent demonstrated at so high a level as by Hadden Sayers.
There are a bunch of great tunes on this CD, with my favorites being the infectious tune "Down and Out (Of My Mind)", the hard driving "Johnny Law", and a slow Texas ballad "Everybody's Talkin'" which is a splendid example of the tremendous new music I have been hearing of late and have labeled as "American rock", as I did with recordings from Stone, Jesse Evans, and Alastair Greene. Sayers starts the set with perhaps my favorite tune "Bring It To Me Slowly", which he begins by asking the crowd "Y'all ready?"-An unpretentious beginning to an unpretentious yet spectacular recording. This music is very straight forward and performed in like manner by an extremely God gifted artist. Little wonder that I have been so taken with it.
"Swingin' From the Fabulous Satellite" is available at the band's official web site at www.haddensayers.com, and if you have not concluded so already, it comes with my patented "let the gas get turned off this month if necessary to have money to buy it" seal of approval.
Many thanks to Chris, Colorado's number one Bluesrocker, for the tip on this great CD. Keep on rockin', Sister Sass!
From Los Angeles, CA: I picked this CD up after seeing Sayers live at Blue Cafe in Long Beach. He's got a unique approach to songcraft that's nonetheless rooted in blues & R&B, and he puts it all across with plenty of gusto and very little ego. Great stuff, and I look forward to other Hadden Sayers CDs.
From Vintage Guitar Magazine: The press material with this CD says Sayers has been a fixture on the Houston rock scene for some time. One quick listen and it’s not hard to figure out why. Very tight arrangements of catchy tunes, with excellent playing all around, make this sound like a band bound to be a hit. Sayers puts his songwriting above his guitar slinging, but that’s not to say he can’t play. Check out “Cryin’ For Mercy.” This rocker, with crunchy guitars, features some great stop-time guitar breaks and ends with some rollicking double-stops. “Pray for Rain” sounds like the Stones until a mid-eastern-type solo takes over, ending with sharp hammer-ons. The cool pop/funk of “Money Man” features some nice slide work to go along with a funny lyric. In the world where I grew up, “Can’t Be Satisfied” would be a certified radio hit. Yeah, I know, radio has changed, but this rocker calls to mind the best of ’70s rock with very tasty, air guitar-inducing solo. I hope we hear more from Mr. Sayers and his partners in crime.
